Get a Pap Smear (cervical cytology) at VRX Diagno Lounge, Goregaon West — the standard screening test for cervical cancer and pre-cancer in women aged 21–65. Performed by trained gynaecologist or technician at the centre. Pathologist-reviewed report in 2–3 working days.
The Pap Smear collects cells from the cervix to detect pre-cancerous changes (CIN), cervical cancer, and HPV-related abnormalities. It is one of the most successful cancer-screening tests in medical history — early detection allows treatment of pre-cancer before it becomes cancer. Performed during a brief speculum examination, it is recommended every 3 years (or 5 years with HPV co-testing) for women aged 21–65.
Detects CIN-1, CIN-2, CIN-3 — treatable changes that, untreated, can progress to cancer
Cellular changes caused by Human Papilloma Virus — the underlying cause of cervical cancer
Mild abnormalities that need follow-up or HPV testing
Direct detection of malignant cells when present
Less common but important — points to upper genital tract
Yeast, trichomonas, bacterial vaginosis can be incidentally noted
Standard cervical cancer screening age range
HPV is sexually transmitted — risk begins with first activity
More frequent follow-up as advised by gynaecologist
Annual screening due to higher progression risk
Higher HPV exposure risk — periodic screening important
Smoking increases cervical cancer risk independently
Genetic and shared-risk factors warrant timely screening
Long-term oral contraceptive use is a risk factor
| Parameter | What It Measures | Reference Range |
|---|---|---|
| NILM | Negative for Intraepithelial Lesion or Malignancy | Normal — repeat in 3 years |
| ASC-US | Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance | Repeat / HPV co-test |
| LSIL / CIN-1 | Low-grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion | Colposcopy or repeat |
| HSIL / CIN-2,3 | High-grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion | Colposcopy + biopsy |
| AGC | Atypical Glandular Cells | Colposcopy + endometrial sampling |
| Carcinoma | Direct evidence of cancer | Urgent gynaecological oncology referral |
NILM (negative) — no abnormality detected. Continue 3-yearly screening (or 5-yearly with HPV co-test). Continue routine yearly screening if you have risk factors.
Any abnormality (ASC-US, LSIL, HSIL, AGC, or carcinoma) requires gynaecological follow-up — repeat smear, HPV testing, colposcopy, or biopsy as appropriate. Your physician will correlate with symptoms and history.
Every report is reviewed by an experienced pathologist with clear interpretation and clinical comment.
