Get a DEXA Bone Density Scan (BMD) at VRX Diagno Lounge, Goregaon West — the gold-standard test for diagnosing osteoporosis, assessing fracture risk, and monitoring bone-protective treatment. Available exclusively at our Goregaon West centre. Same-day radiologist-reviewed report.
DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is the gold-standard bone density test. It measures bone mineral density (BMD) at the hip and lumbar spine and reports a T-score (compared to young healthy adult) and Z-score (age-matched). It is used to diagnose osteopenia and osteoporosis, assess fracture risk, and monitor treatment with bisphosphonates or other bone-protective therapy. Painless, takes 15–20 minutes, very low radiation.
T-score ≤ -2.5 confirms osteoporosis — fracture-prevention treatment usually advised
T-score -1.0 to -2.5 — early bone loss, lifestyle and supplements
Combined with FRAX calculator for 10-year fracture risk
Repeat at 12–24 months to confirm bisphosphonate response
Long-term oral steroid users — annual assessment
Routine in postmenopausal women aged 65+ (or 50+ with risk)
Routine screening
If risk factors (low BMI, smoker, family history)
Annual screening for osteoporosis
More than 3 months of oral prednisone equivalent
Hip, spine, wrist fractures from minimal trauma
Calcium-PTH disorder workup
Especially with bone pain or fracture
Earlier screening in high-risk family histories
| Parameter | What It Measures | Reference Range |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Healthy bone density | T-score ≥ -1.0 |
| Osteopenia | Low bone mass | T-score -1.0 to -2.5 |
| Osteoporosis | Significant bone loss | T-score ≤ -2.5 |
| Severe Osteoporosis | Osteoporosis + fracture | T-score ≤ -2.5 + fragility fracture |
| Z-Score | Age-matched comparison | Z < -2.0 = below expected |
| Sites Measured | Standard sites for diagnosis | Hip + Lumbar Spine |
Normal T-score (≥ -1.0) at hip and spine — continue lifestyle measures and repeat in 5 years if no risk factors. Continue routine yearly screening if you have risk factors.
Osteopenia (-1.0 to -2.5) and osteoporosis (≤ -2.5) need treatment depending on fracture risk. Vitamin D, calcium, and bisphosphonates are common interventions. Your physician will correlate with symptoms and history.
Every report is reviewed by an experienced pathologist with clear interpretation and clinical comment.
If further evaluation is needed — Vitamin D, Calcium, PTH, FRAX Risk Calculator, X-Ray Spine, Endocrinology Consult — all available at the Goregaon West centre.
